What Facilitators Need To Know About Trauma – a free online workshop with Mark Walsh
Learning about trauma over the last 15 years has hugely informed how I do all trainings, and means I can avoid doing harm as a facilitator.
This training is for professional facilitators who’d like to be “trauma aware” (without becoming therapists) so they can have more effective and safer trainings. It’s suitable for coaches and group facilitators of all kinds – including yoga and martial arts teachers. People must be robust and have a sense of humour to attend.
The workshop will be fast-paced, light-hearted and super practical in nature.
What will I get?
● What trauma actual is (beyond the hype and politicalisation)
● Main symptoms and how these show up in the training room
● Impact of trauma on learning
● Doing “your own work” – why and how
● Causes and treatments for trauma available
● Trauma’s impact on trust and student-teacher relationship
● Boundary issues from trauma
● The five “invisible” mistakes that will cause harm as a facilitators
● Common misunderstandings
● Helpful and unhelpful uses of humour
● Gatekeeping and referring
● How to be trauma aware without treading on eggshells
Please note – this is not a therapeutic session for your now trauma but a fast-paced educational event. If you have an untreated trauma background some examples given may be triggering and there will be no space for processing.
Why should I listen to you?
Maybe you shouldn’t, I’m not everyone’s cup of crack. I am however a decent trauma educator having had a long apprenticeship under Paul Linden. Aside from my own trauma background in areas of conflict I also have experience teaching many NGO’s (e.g. Save The Children, Oxfam, Warchild), militaries (e.g in Ukraine and Sierra Leone) and even leading a trauma education briefing in The House of Lords…which impressed my mum. My style is excellent for the robust with a sense of humour, and a nightmare for the “woke” offended.
